What is the Trinity? - Is Christianity for You

The Trinity is one of the unique distinctions in all world-views. God is one (monotheism), yet three persons. Theologians have tried to compare the Trinity to a fruit salad, or a person who fulfills different roles, such as husband, father, and son. Others have said God is like a three-leaf clover. No imagery adequately describes the triune God.

By far, the most quotable passage containing all three members of the Godhead is Matthew 28:18-20: "And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

This passage, in conjunction with passages like Genesis 1:26-28, paint an accurate picture as the triune God. God has always existed as the Trinity. Theologians have called this the dance of God. All the persons of the Godhead existing as one substance in perfect relationship with each other. Mystery? For sure. Unique? Without a doubt. Amazing and worthy of praise? Absolutely.

Reflect: Which member of the Trinity do you feel closest to? Which do you feel challenged in knowing?

Take time and meditate on the uniqueness and power of God. Then talk to God about your love for Him.
