Close Enough is Not Enough “Dad! The Xbox isn’t working!”
“Are you sure?”
“Yep! It’s definitely not working.”
“Is it plugged in?”
“Of course, it is! It’s not working.” This exchange happened a few weeks ago at my home. To be honest, it’s not an uncommon exchange.
I went downstairs, looked at the back of the Xbox. Sure enough, it was unplugged from the power source. Even with the power cord being near the Xbox, it refused to work. Like that power cord, many Christians today aren’t connected to God. They know God. They appreciate God, but they’re not really connected to Him. The result is a life disconnected from lasting joy, a grateful heart, and thankfulness.
If you feel disconnected from God and are searching for true joy, listen to King David.
“I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave. You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever” (
Psalm 16:8-11).
God’s presence is life-changing and life-giving. But to experience this joy and thankfulness, you must intimately know God. You must be in His presence. You must be plugged into God.
It's just like my youngest son hating to go into a dark room. Even when I’m near him—just a few feet away—he hates it. But when I hold his hand, he knows I’m there. He is plugged into my power and presence.
No matter what circumstances you are facing today, get connected to God through prayer and reflecting on His presence in your life. God is there. God is right beside you. He is life. He is the source of unending joy. There is great joy in walking with Him. Today, get plugged in and see the difference it makes.
Receive: Read
Psalm 16. What types of Israelites did David see? What blessings does David praise God for? Where are David’s hope and joy?
Reflect: What do you delight in? Where is your source of joy? How can God be that source?
Respond: God, you are truly good. You love me. You protect me. You are always there for me and with me. Draw me near, so my joy might increase. Amen.
